If you want to read and speak Thai naturally, the first step is learning the Thai consonants.
They’re the building blocks of every syllable, just like the ABCs in English — but Thai has a few unique twists!
Let’s explore the 44 Thai consonants, their names, sounds, and tone classes together
What Are Thai Consonants?
Thai consonants are called “พยัญชนะ (phá-yan-chá-ná)”, and there are 44 letters in total.
Each consonant represents an initial sound and has a class that affects the tone when reading Thai.
Thai consonants are divided into 3 tone classes:
🌿 High Class (เสียงสูง – sǐiang sǔung)
🌸 Mid Class (เสียงกลาง – sǐiang glaang)
🌾 Low Class (เสียงต่ำ – sǐiang tàm)
Tips for Learning Thai Consonants
Learn them by sound and picture
Each consonant has a name that helps you remember its sound, e.g.
“กอ ไก่” (gaw gài) – “chicken,” “ขอ ไข่” (khaw khài) – “egg.”Focus on tone classes early
Knowing whether a consonant is high, mid, or low helps you pronounce tones correctly later.Practice writing
Writing helps you remember shapes and sound patterns. Try tracing letters while saying them aloud.Group similar sounds
Many consonants have the same sound (like ค, ฅ, ฆ all sound kh) but differ in class. This matters for tones.
